Les enseignants comme agents de socialisation politique au Québec

The purpose of this study is to analyse the teacher's role in initiating students to politics and particularly to examine the extent to which they contribute directly to this process through discussion of political questions with students. We formulated the hypothesis that teachers prefer not to engage in such discussion. Our study was based on data provided through questionnaires completed by a sampling of secondary school teachers. The study led to the conclusion that teachers tend not to play a very active part in the political socialization of students. Contrary to fears expressed by certain groups concerning this debated issue in Quebec, the discussion of politics between teachers and students did not appear to be an important factor in the political socialization taking place in our educational system.
