The advance organizer was originally proposed by David Ausubel as a means of facilitating significant learning and transfer. This research evaluates the effectiveness of the advance organizer as a teaching strategy. Fifty-seven undergraduate teachers served as subjects in this experiment. Instructional modules were used to present the principles of behavioural analysis presented in an inservice course. Following a pretest to evaluate the teachers' prior mastery of the concepts taught in the course, the subjects studied three self-instructional modules for a total of three hours. Statistically significant differences between the pre- and post-test scores confirmed the effectiveness of the advance organizer presented at the beginning of the module. Statistical analysis did not confirm the transfer effects of this mode of instruction. A discussion of the results and their implications for further research are presented.
