The Work of School Board Chief Executive Officers

Recent studies of educational administrators have produced detailed descriptions of their work. Analysis of the purposes that shape this behaviour has received less comprehensive attention. This report is a result of field research involving observation of 16 board of education chief executive officers. The investigation goes beyond work characteristics and reasons for specific segments of work activity. It examines the personal-career axis of executive motivation. Second, it explores how relevant is the mental outlook of the functionary for insight into the conduct of school board officials. Implications are suggested for: (1) career planning; (2) organizational leadership; and (3) the administrator's influence over policy outcomes in the field of education.
