Maîtrise du schème de la combinatoire (permutations) chez des adolescents en classes spéciales

Ninety subjects from a regular intermediary, and a remedial classroom in the first cycle of secondary school (12-13-year olds) were tested individually with the help of a Piagetian operative examination pointing out a general scheme of permutations. A marking scheme was developed bearing in mind the type of strategies used. Five operative levels were distinguished. The results show that the subjects in the intermediary classes have not yet managed to structure their concrete operations; most remedial class were situated at the concrete operative level and those in the regular class clustered about the formal-concrete continuum. Only 26.6% of those tested attained the two formal operative levels. The authors examine the scholastic consequences of these results.
