Influence de la Pratique Immédiate sur la Rétention d'une Habileté Intellectuelle Supérieure

This is a study of the effect of immediate practice on the retention of a written French grammar rule. The subjects were Grade 5 students. After having learned a rule through the use of individual study materials prepared according to the Gagné model, the students, depending on which experimental group they had been assigned to, did 1, 4, 8, or 12 exercises calling for application of the rule. The results show no significant differences in performance between different groups of subjects in the retention test. The conditions most favorable to rule acquisition and retention would appear to be mastery of previously taught material and inclusion of all the steps involved in the teaching process.
