Alternative Futures for Faculties of Education

The article attempts to predict mid-range futures of Faculties of Education in Canadian universities through analyses stemming from organization theory. Some worst case scenarios are presented as the end result of natural tendencies within organizations. These scenarios represent various forms of drift and can be avoided only through specific countervailing action. Some best case scenarios are then presented as different models to which faculties may aspire. The perspective of the paper is to get beyond the fine-tuning or tactical changes which occupy most of our attention, to focus upon choices among strategic alternatives involving substantially different missions.
