Streaming, Absenteeism, and Dropping-Out

Cet article présente un modèle descriptif des phénomènes d'absentéisme et d'abandon scolaire précoce. Pour les besoins de l'étude, on a utilisé un recensement des étudiants inscrits en 1974-1975 au secondaire III, IV, et V - secteur francophone - d'une importante commission scolaire québécoise située dans une région hautement urbanisée. Selon une analyse de tableaux de classification, il semblerait que le système de répartition des élèves par niveau est inversement relié à l'absentéisme et à l'abandon scolaire, même lorsque sont considérés isolément l'intelligence, l'âge, les succès scolaires et le type d'école. Un modèle analytique de cheminement confirme d'ailleurs cette analyse: le système de répartition des élèves par niveau demeure associé tant à l'absentéisme qu'à l'abandon scolaire. Les données recueillies corroborent également quelques résultats de recherches antérieures sur le phénomène d'abandon scolaire. Certaines conclusions de la présente étude sont cependant nuancées en fonction des politiques d'intervention.
