Teacher Expectations and Student Characteristics

On a remis à 208 professeurs et stagiaires en enseignement engagés pour la session d'été à la Memorial University un faux bulletin de notes à un élève de 6e année auquel on avait joint une photo de l'élève. Les bulletins étaient identiques, sauf pour le sexe (genre) ou l'aspect physique de l'élève. Ce test est une réplique des expériences antérieures de Clifford et Walster (1973) et Clifton et Baksh (1978). On a essayé d'étendre les résultats de leurs tests de deux façons: premièrement, en augmentant le nombre de variables dépendantes; deuxièmement, en utilisant une analyse de régression pour comparer l'importance du sexe (genre) de l'élève, son aspect physique et la scolarité du professeur par rapport aux attentes envers l'élève. Le sexe et l'aspect physique de l'élève influent peu sur les attentes. De plus, pour plus de la moitié des attentes, la scolarité du professeur avait une plus grande influence que les caractéristiques de l'élève. Enfin, on a constaté que plus la scolarité du professeur est élevée plus il a d'attentes négatives envers les enfants. On traite des influences de ce test sur les recherches ayant trait aux attentes (aspirations) des professeurs en tenant compte des effets possibles sur les programmes de formation des maîtres.
