Résumé

The present article consists of two parts. We establish, in the first part, the course of development which permitted the identification of the time that students devote to learning as a determining variable in studies of the effectiveness of instruction. It is the issue of the notion of "learning time" as defined by the original proponents. Then, we describe how this idea has been integrated into an area of research on the effectiveness of instruction in physical education. We present, in the second part, a general description of an observation system that permits the estimation of the time devoted to learning by students. This system is a French-language version of the "ALT-PE" system developed and refined by Siedentop, Birdwell and Metzler (1979). We have used for descriptive purposes an instructional session in physical education in the school setting. Finally, we end with a discussion of the possibilities for modifying the system.
