The Canadian Community College in the 1980s: Strategies for Survival

Cet article analyse les stratégies que les collèges publics canadiens devront adopter s'ils veulent survivre au cours de la prochaine décennie sans compromettre leur orientation fondamentale. Pour situer les problèmes des collèges dans une perspective assez large nous évoquons d'abord les systèmes de valeurs opposés qui influent sur le développement de plusieurs institutions socio-culturelles au Canada. Les systèmes de valeurs que nous décrivons ont exercé une influence lors de l'élaboration du concept de collège communautaire, il est donc important que l'analyse des stratégies décrites ci-après les prenne en considération. Nous avons consacré une partie de cet article à la description historique des forces sociales, économiques, et politiques qui ont contribué à la création des collèges; nous référons ensuite aux données tirées des recherches récentes sur leur situation actuelle. Enfin, l'article se termine par l'étude des stratégies que les collèges devront nécessairement adopter dans la décennie à venir s'ils veulent survivre aux pressions économiques, politiques et sociales qui menacent de les forcer à renoncer aux principes novateurs et idéalistes qui ont présidé à leur fondation.
