La Formation des Maîtres: Notes pour un Revirement

Abstract

Teacher education is at a crossroad in the Province of Quebec. Since 1968, teacher preparation has been under the official responsibility of the universities. But to this day, government policies remain virtually nonexistent and, although many experiments have been tried, no university can state clearly its philosophy of teacher training. The object of this paper is to submit observations and invite all interested to reflect upon what the author believes is the fundamental axis of teacher preparation. The thrust of the argument is to comment upon the concept of teacher as philanthropist and to articulate the basic characteristics of this concept. Finally, the author concludes by affirming his conviction that unless teacher-training programs rediscover and reinstate values education in their curriculum, little can be expected of future educators in terms of essential attitudes and qualities.
