Les termes « multiculturalisme » et « enseignement multiculturel » ont été utilisés ces dernières années plus parce qu'ils sont d'usage courant que par unanimité. Dans le but de clarifier certaines des ambiguïtés entourant ces deux concepts, l'article qui suit démontre que des questions d'intention et de pratique dans le domaine de l'enseignement multiculturel ne peuvent être résolues d'une manière satisfaisante tant et aussi longtemps que l'on écartera les questions sociétales plus générales des relations ethniques et du multiculturalisme. L'article examine les diverses conceptions qu'on peut avoir des relations ethniques au Canada et explique jusqu'à quel point chacune réfère à une interprétation différente de l'enseignement multiculturel et du rôle de l'école.
