Résumé

Maintenant que le programme de français par immersion s'avère un choix bien établi en matière d'enseignement pour les élèves de la Commission scolaire de Carleton, il devient important d'examiner les facteurs qui sont susceptibles d'influer sur le rendement des étudiants. Cette étude avait pour objet de comparer deux milieux d'apprentissage de français: dans le premier cas il s'agissait d'un milieu ne comportant qu'un programme d'immersion alors que dans le deuxième cas il s'agissait d'un milieu offrant un programme d'immersion de français et le programme régulier d'anglais. Les résultats d'évaluations de tels programmes avaient fait naître l'hypothèse selon laquelle l'environnement des centres d'apprentissage pouvait être plus propice à la réussite des étudiants dans un programme de français par immersion seulement que dans l'environnement offrant à la fois un programme d'immersion et un programme régulier d'anglais. Dans les deux cas précités, on a soumis des étudiants de 5ième année à une série de tests de connaissance de français, d'anglais et autres matières académiques. On a également élaboré divers questionnaires dans le but de recueillir des renseignements pertinents de la part d'étudiants, d'enseignants et de directeurs d'écoles. L'analyse des résultats montre que les étudiants des centres d'immersion seule ont mieux réussi que ceux des écoles offrant les deux programmes, et ce, sous plusieurs aspects touchant leurs aptitudes en français et en anglais. L'implication générale de cette étude pour la planification de programmes d'immersion est d'offrir un milieu scolaire qui favorise l'utilisation maximale du français.
