Les études récentes portant sur le travail des administrateurs scolaires présentent des descriptions détaillées des activités de ces personnes. Par ailleurs, les motifs à partir desquels ces comportements se structurent ont été relativement peu analysés. Cet article rapporte une étude sur le terrain et notamment une observation structurée portant sur 16 personnes occupant des postes de cadres supérieurs dans des commissions scolaires. Au-delà des caractéristiques de leur travail, ou des raisons qui justifient des segments précis de leur tâche, cette enquête s'intéresse à la motivation des cadres et particulièrement à leur motivation de carrière. Dans le second volet de la recherche, l'auteur s'intéresse à la mentalité du fonctionnaire et à la pertinence de ce concept pour la compréhension des conduites des cadres de commissions scolaires. Des implications sont dégagées touchant (1) l'établissement de plans de carrière, (2) le leadership organisationnel et (3) l'influence des administrateurs sur les résultats des politiques dans le domaine de l'éducation.
